The Argun Gorge, one of the longest in the Caucasus, stretches 75 miles along the Argun River, from Khevsuretia in the south to the Chechen Plain in the north. It is currently a dead end – a local road linking Grozny with three mountainous regions – Shatoisky, Itum-Kalinsky and Sharoisky.
The Starye Atagi village sits at the foot of the mountains; the Shatoisky District is cradled between forest-covered summits and an abyss with a rapid river. The photo shows a medieval watchtower at the northern exit from Ushkaloi.
